Two routes to one recognised diploma.

In Switzerland, the gymnasial matura certificate can be obtained via two official routes: study at a recognised school, or the centralised Swiss matura exam.

The recognised gymnasium

The classic route: attending a gymnasium, lyceum or college whose programme is jointly recognised by the Confederation and the CDPE. The certificate is awarded directly by the school upon completion of the programme.

  • Programme lasting 3 to 4 years depending on the canton
  • Admission based on cantonal criteria (exam or grades)
  • Continuous academic support and regular assessments
  • Compulsory interdisciplinary matura thesis
  • National recognition guaranteed by MRRO
  • Available at public gymnasiums and certain recognised private schools

The Swiss matura exam

The centralised and independent route, accessible without attending a recognised gymnasium. It is aimed at autonomous candidates, adult learners and students at private preparatory schools.

  • Organised by SERI and the Swiss Matura Commission
  • Two sessions per year: spring and autumn
  • Free preparation or at a private preparatory school
  • High level of difficulty — pass rate below 60%
  • Open to candidates of any age
  • Certificate equivalent to that of a recognised gymnasium

Private schools: key distinctions.

The question of private schools is often a source of confusion. There are actually two clearly distinct categories:

Recognised private school

Some private schools have obtained official cantonal recognition for their matura programme. Their students receive the certificate directly from the school, without sitting the centralised Swiss exam. This certificate carries the same legal value as a cantonal diploma.

Private preparatory school

Other private schools prepare students for the Swiss matura exam without awarding the certificate themselves. The diploma is obtained after passing the SERI centralised exam. This is a fully valid route, but the exam is demanding.

How to check a school's status?

SERI publishes the official list of schools whose matura programme is federally recognised. Before enrolling, check whether the institution is on this list or whether it prepares students for the Swiss centralised exam.

Which route to choose?

If you are looking for a structured programme with continuous support, the recognised gymnasium is the ideal choice. If you are an adult, self-employed or have an unusual schedule, the Swiss matura exam offers the flexibility you need.
